who we are

Our Story and History

Founded with the vision of creating accessible equine assisted programs, RDAV has grown from a small volunteer group to a network of 32 centres across Victoria. Our journey has been one of passion, dedication, and continuous learning, always guided by the needs of our participants. Over the years, RDAV has developed specialised programs for individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, and our organisation remains committed to growth and excellence.

Our Impact

At RDAV, we’ve witnessed firsthand the powerful impact of our programs. Each year, our 1,000 volunteers and 255 trained horses serve over 550 participants, helping them achieve goals that reach far beyond the riding arena. The benefits of equine-assisted activities go beyond physical fitness—they include emotional growth, social engagement, and increased self-esteem.

Through your support, RDAV continues to expand, reach more individuals, and make a difference one session at a time.

“RDAV has changed my life. Riding has given me strength, confidence, and a place where I feel included.”

Enriching Lives Through Horses

Horses are the cornerstone of our program with horse welfare and safety a primary focus. Each centre requires a variety of horses and ponies of different sizes as they have to be carefully matched to the riders needs and abilities. If they don’t have a suitable horse, that rider can’t join the program.

The horses need to be carefully selected to show the right temperament, to be obedient and calm to handle having a dead weight, an unbalanced rider on their back, loud noise, wheelchairs.

With their calming presence, they will help their person to learn new skills, to take instructions, to gain confidence, to build strength, to interact with those around them, to enjoy the freedom of movement, to access physical activities, to find that sense of calm and wellbeing a horse can bring.

Programs and Services

Our programs are designed to meet the unique needs of each participant. Whether it’s riding, groundwork activities, or carriage driving, RDAV’s services provide safe and enjoyable experiences tailored to individuals aged 3 to 65 with diverse abilities.

  • Riding: Riding helps participants build physical strength, coordination, and balance, while also offering the joy and freedom of movement.
  • Groundwork: In this non-riding program, participants learn to work alongside horses, building skills in communication, confidence, and trust.
  • Carriage Driving: Offering an alternative to riding, carriage driving provides a sense of adventure, control, and independence.

Our skilled coaches and volunteers work with each participant to achieve their personal goals, whether it’s improving mobility, building self-confidence, or simply enjoying the companionship of a horse.

Our Team and Volunteers

RDAV’s dedicated team and volunteers are the heart of our organisation. Each staff member and volunteer brings compassion, patience, and expertise to their role, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for participants. Our volunteers undergo comprehensive training to assist with programs and interact with participants, playing a vital role in RDAV’s success.
